Eat More. Do Less.

My Open 15.1 Nightmare (Prediction)

Of course nobody has any idea what the Open 15.1 workout will look like, but it’s fun to throw out “what ifs”. I’ll throw my hat into the ring.

My guess it that it will be “The Mirror”.

The bane of our existence as Crossfitters is last year’s 14.5 with no time cap. Thrusters and burpees. Awful. It looked like this:

How awful would it be if 15.1 was the mirror workout of this. Meaning:

3 Thrusters / 3 Burpees
6 Thrusters / 6 Burpees
9 Thrusters / 9 Burpees
12 Thrusters / 12 Burpees
15 Thrusters / 15 Burpees
18 Thrusters / 18 Burpees
21 Thrusters / 21 Burpees

The Logic

Why would this happen? The first workout of the Open is often a couplet (two paired movements). This is the worst of them all. And what better way to open the Open than just reversing the order as if it was a mirror image of the final workout of last year’s Open. Sick, huh? Well…that sounds like Dave Castro.

Previous Open workouts tend to be repeated. This is a great one to repeat for a number of reasons. The first is that we get the repeat out of the way. The repeat is even more likely to come first because of the new split for Rx and scaled divisions. Once the repeat happens we’re really guessing about the rest of them.

This is a burner workout. Who better to do it than 4 time Games champ Rich Froning who also won this event at last year’s announcement. The fact that he is paired against Matt Fraser, the second place finisher in the 2014 Games (as a rookie no less) and odds on favorite to win the Games this year, means Crossfit is really hyping the battle between the two. We know what Froning can do in this workout, so it would be a good test to see if Fraser has what it takes to dethrone the Champ.

Traditionally, the winner of the the open also wins the Games. Maybe if Froning wins, this will convince him to compete as an individual again this year, which he says won’t happen. If Fraser wins, then he becomes the even stronger favorite to win the Games, especially if Froning goes for the team competition. It’s a no lose situation for Crossfit HQ.

Can you imagine Rich being beaten during a live event, especially when it’s a one-on-one battle? They are both going to give everything. Fraser to prove he has what it takes to beat Froning, and Froning to prove he still has what it takes to be King.

And if my prediction is right, I’m going to fake a heart attack during the round of 6…
